I am looking to get a street legal dirt bike for commuting back and forth to college and local errands. Also I have permission to ride on a couple farms. I know nothing about bikes and will prob. be buying used so if someone could just point me in the right direction I would appereciate it.

Right now I am driving my diesel f250 work truck everywhere so I need something smaller for improved gas mileage...

I was in a similar situation recently, and I looked at some new model dual-sport bikes:
Yamaha
tw200
xt250
wr250r
kawasaki
super sherpa
klx250s
honda
CRF230L
suzuki
dr200se
dr-z400s
I ended up getting a TW200 since it had the fat ATV style tires and it is a blast when I ride w/ my jeep buddies. It’s not so good on the hiway it has a comfortable max of 55Mph thanks to the 5-speed low gearing – it shines off the road even off the trail
If I keep under 45mph I get 80mpg, if I want to go faster I have to change the front sprocket at least +1, I am considering that.
For hiway use get one of the 250′s or the DR400, the 6-speed and skinny tires will be a bit faster 65mph+ no problem.
cheers
There are several great enduros that are street legal, as well as plenty of dual-sports. My personal favorites are the Kawasaki KLR250, Yamaha WR250X, Honda XR250 through 650(you can buy light kits for these bikes to make them street legal), and the Husaberg TE/TC models. You should also look at what KTM, Husqvarna, and ATK have to offer as well, and don’t forget to check out the Suzuki DRZ400S. I highly recommend searching eBay Motors for the above-mentioned bikes, as there are lots of them up for auction at all times on eBay. Just make sure that whatever you buy has no mechanical problems, needs no work right away(such as tires, engine maintenance, chain and sprockets) and has low to medium mileage, 7500 miles or less. You need to ask questions such as when was the last oil change, how often the bike was ridden, was it ever wrecked, when the air filter was last serviced/replaced. Also make sure that the frame and engine numbers match, and have your local police department do a VIN number search to make sure that the bike wasn’t stolen and/or wrecked previously. By having this invaluable knowledge, the less likely you are to get scammed, and the more likely you will buy the best bike for you.
I had the same problem. I drive a F350 diesel and bought a new XT250 Yamaha and it has been a great commuter/ dirt bike. I have been riding it everyday with no problems. New it was $ 4200. I get 85 MPG and a top speed of 78 but can cruise comfortably at 60 to 65. I am a big man at 6 foot and 235 and the bike is comfortable and fits me well even at my size. The TW200 a friend of mine had was good but too slow for highway use. I have used my XT250 every day for 6 months now and have not even needed to change a spark plug.
